Mainstreaming Nature Using GI

16 Feb 2022

Mainstreaming Nature Using GI A presentation for the Planning Research Conference. Defines green infrastructure, ecosystems services and natural capital. Covers the concept of mainstreaming – ensuring that GI is considered in economic, social, health and climate change policy making. Barriers to this might include a silo mentality, dilution, greenwashing and too much compromise, and the use of conventional accounting seeing the environment as a valueless liability. Discusses the need for a better evidence base which “measures what we value” rather than the reverse. Gives good practice examples – South Downs, Building with Nature. Points out that the pathway from innovation to persuasion to adoption may not be straightforward.
